AOL makes it terribly simple for his or her members to report spam. I might say they make it too easy. Just click the button “Report Spam”. Unfortunately, there’s no note near that button that claims “If you subscribed, simply unsubscribe.” No, simply “Report Spam.”
And that they do. Rather than unsubscribe, some AOL subscribers can report your e-zine as spam. They opted in and signed-up. They confirmed their subscription by e-mail. Their name, e-mail address, IP address, and date and time of subscribing have all been tracked. However, they are reporting you as a spammer. This, to me, sets beyond impolite, because it may have an effect on the name and living of the one being reported.
I wish I could say that receiving obscenities or terrorization by e-mail is rare. Despondently, this is not the primary time for me. Among the many messages I obtain are some that say {that the} e-mail I tried to send (from some strange or senseless name at my domain) was not deliverable or blocked and is being returned to me. Of course, I in no way sent that e-mail in the first place.
Sometimes, I obtain impolite (generally threatening) e-mails from folks who thought I sent them some of these fake e-mails. This can be the equal of swear words at and bullying someone who you suspect permitted his dog to defecate on your lawn. The only problem is that the man does not have a dog.
Again, I sympathize with people who are aggravated by spam. I just would like they’d point their annoyance at the spammers rather than me.
