A study by Sharpe Partners, an interactive marketing agency, revealed that 89% of adult Internet users in America share content with others via e-mail. This is excellent news for those companies who use self-propelling “word-of-mouse” e-mail techniques to sell their products.

The study generated some interesting results regarding the type of content that is most often forwarded, as well.  The most popular content is humorous material.

The second most popular category is news, followed by healthcare and medical information, religious and spiritual material, games, business and personal finance information and sports/hobbies… in that order. So it is easy to see that humor is the best content for your viral e-mail campaign.

Cartoons, jokes and funny video clips are among the things that can be added to an e-mail to insure that it will go viral. People will want to pass along something that makes them laugh.

They are a lot more likely to hit the forward button and send your email to their friends and relatives if it is an “advertainment” rather than an advertisement.

Not along ago, about 35 million people got an e-mail containing a picture taken in Disneyland. It took a minute to see it but there was Donald Duck lying prone in front of the famous Cinderella Castle.  The title of the picture was “Bird Flu has hit Disneyland”. It was a viral e-mail advertising Disneyland and used the edgy strategy of making light of what’s serious… and it works.

I’d guess that most people who own a computer have seen that picture… and thus the advertisement for Disneyland.  The bird flu epidemic is newsworthy and has the potential to attract an enormous amount of attention to any brand that might, for whatever reason, associate itself with it.

Remember that people are much more likely to share a joke or a funny picture than anything else so you would be well advised to include humor in your e-mail campaign.

When people set out to embark upon an online direct marketing campaign, they sometimes are a bit befuddled as to how to go about finding someone who can craft good copy for them. This is not a surprise, as writing for the Web, and direct marketing in particular, requires a specific skillset that many offline writers may not as yet grasped. Let’s look at some of the things that will make your online direct marketing efforts bear fruit.

This type of marketing campaign can take on several forms online. The most typical would be an e-mail campaign. This necessitates the need for the writer to craft an e-mail (or a series of e-mails) that not only get opened, but are able to get the response you are looking for, whether that be a sale, opt-in, redirect or CPA offer.

Other types of writing for direct marketing online include pay per click ads, autoresponder series, reports, and more. Writing for these types of Web copy require that the writer have a firm grasp of what works on the Web.
First, attention spans are notoriously short online. You have perhaps ten seconds to get their attention, or they’re gone! Therefore, it’s imperative to get to the point quickly, and keep it short! Make sure they use a lot of “white space”, (shorter paragraphs) and aren’t afraid of sub-headers.
Your pitch shouldn’t be a mystery, and don’t make them work for it. Make sure your writer knows how to lay it all out for them in a genuine, friendly manner rather than a hypey, non-personal message.
Today’s consumers are bombarded with hundreds of sale messages every day, and the only way yours will stand out is if it is made to appear crafted only for them.
Take some time choosing your web copywriter, as the success of your online direct marketing depends on it!

.
•    A signpost about something that matters to you.
•    A place to recommend your favorite stuff.
•    A popular way to get found more on the web

Google also LOVES content posted on Squidoo, so make sure you include a link to your own website in the Introdution. 7.    Brand your car with your Web Address.
Think about how much time you spend in traffic with someone staring at your car’s rear window. Captive marketing at it’s best.  Better still -  include your mobile number and a message for them to call you now to chat! (as long as you have a hands-free kit)

8.    Measure your Marketing, so that  you know what’s working and what isn’t. Keep a log-book/ record of how people found out about your business. You should do this for all telephone enquiries.

And if you’re really smart – register a number of slightly different versions of your web domain and use these in your different marketing campaigns. (i.e. use a .net for one, .com for another, .info for yet another)

Why? Because you can then set-up redirects for these domains to your normal web address, and count every single visit that gets referred from them (as long as you’ve installed Google Analytics in Step 3)

This allows you to measure radio adverts, print adverts, brochures….  There’s no need to guess anymore whether your marketing is driving leads to your website … or not.

Make sure you do this on your website too (get your web developer to add a small drop-down menu of options as to how people found you) You can create your own form and replace your current email address link on your website.

Visit: http://www.formlogix.com/Form_Maker.aspx

9.    Add a social bookmarking toolbar to your website. This a great way to get other people to spread the word about content on your website.

Visit – http://www.addthis.com/web-button-select.html

10.    Set-up and send-out out an online Customer Survey. It’s a great form of marketing, and allows you to :

  • Get Customer Feedback on Your Service and Product (always make sure to ask what is Good, and How You can Improve things too)
  • Gain Marketing Testimonials (make sure you ask permission to use them)
  • Make contact with previous customers

Think about questions you’d like answers to about your business. Like:

“How did you hear about my business?”
“What are the Things You Enjoyed about Doing Business With Us?”
“What are the things we Could Improve on?”
“Would you recommend us to someone else?”

Then spend some time gathering email addresses from your email client/ inbox, and draft a polite email asking people to visit the survey online. It’s often a good idea to provide a small incentive to customers to complete the survey like a discount off their next purchase etc.  This in-turn will promote business!
